Davy Wilson,
Hall of Fame, Rangers legend
...made
396 league appearances during his twelve-year playing
career, making 22 appearances for Scotland (scoring
ten goals). In 227 appearances for Rangers. Davy won 4
League championships, 5 Scottish Cups, 2 League Cups and a
runners-up medal in the
inaugural UEFA
Cup Winners' Cup in
1961.
He also played for Dundee Utd, Dumbarton and Kilmarnock in
his 26 year playing career.
He later had two spells as manager of Dumbarton, taking them
into the Premier Division in his second spell- widely
regarded as a commendable achievement for a part-time club.
Wilson also had a spell as manager of Dumfries club Queen
of the South.
Davie Wilson was the finest outside left Rangers had found
for 30 years. Not since the days of Alan Morton, the "Wee
Blue Devil" of the Twenties and early Thirties, had anyone
filled the position with such class.
|
What's more, Davy had a natural striker's
touch which made him dangerous in front of goal. His
strike rate of 157 goals in 373 games was extremely high for
a winger. In fact, Davy holds the post-war Rangers record
for the most goals scored by one player in a game. His SIX
against Falkirk in 1962 beat the mark set by Don
Kitchenbrand, who scored five against Queen of the South in
1956.
Davy was born 10th January 1939 and joined Rangers from
Baillieston Juniors in 1956. |
.
Bobby
Tait
is a
Newton man as is Davy Wilson and Jim Torrance. Bobby was
appointed a grade 1 referee by the Scottish Football
Association, and prior to his retirement for the game he
officiated not only at the top level in domestic
competitions but throughout Europe. He now lives in East
Kilbride and is well known as a guest speaker at various
events throughout the country speaking alongside Andy
Goram, Bomber Brown, Chic Charnley and Donald Findlay to
name but a few!. |
